Editor's Verdict:

Think Canada, and think of its proud gay traditions; burly lumberjacks sharing a log cabin on a cold night, heavily made-up mime artists 'coming out' of an invisible box and mounted policemen, to name but a few. GayCanada.com attempts to follow in this tradition. It's not the most prepossessing site that you'll come across, but it's fairly packed with features. What's more, it's free to sign up for basic membership and even email other members without having to upgrade. Whilst the site will be of obvious benefits for residents of Canada, you'll find your options limited if you live elsewhere in the world.

To register on GayCanada.com all you need is a valid email address and a couple of minutes to fill in the online application form. You won't need a credit card as it's free to join. Joining allows you to have a look around the site and decide whether it's worth hanging around. You might be a little put off by the layout of the site. Whilst it's not too difficult to find your way around, it's not as polished or professional-looking as some other gay dating sites. With your basic membership you can create a profile, upload a photo and browse other member profiles. A good first step is to see whether there are any members in your area. Obviously, if you're outside Canada you may be left high and dry, though you will find members in other parts of the world too. The profiles are resonably detailed and the pictures are large enough to give you a good idea of what members look like. In addition to browsing, you can perform simple searches and flirt with members by winking at them. Unlike some other sites, you're also able to email other members without having to upgrade and pay for your membership.

If you're in Canada, don't be put off joining the site as it's possible to have plenty of fun just by chatting and flirting with members online. However, if you fancy meeting and dating guys for real, then take a look at another dating site that covers a different or more widespread geographical area (e.g. try OutPersonals.com). In addition to using the internal email system, it's possible to enter the online chatrooms or use the instant messager system (qmessenger). The site doesn't have the biggest following and you won't always find many members online (there were less than 100 at the time of this review). If you have a webcam you can set it up and watch virtual balls of tumbleweed get blown along. Whilst the upgrade prices are very reasonable, you should think carefully before signing up. It's best just to stick with the free membership, especially as it allows you to email other members, although the amount of storage space you get for your messages is fairly paltry. With basic membership, you'll also get access to the personal ad creator (you're limited to one ad) that you might use to try to convince somebody that you're a really great catch.

If you do disregard this advice, you will get more storage space, a few neat features, such as profile logging (see who's viewed your profile) and a profile watch list (receive notifications when members change or update their profiles). If you upgrade, you'll also get better search tools, as well as plenty of other bits and bobs that you probably won't use much, if at all. The search tools aren't as good as you'll find on most other gay dating sites reviewed here, but seeing as the site's not the largest then it doesn't matter so much. The extra search options that you get for upgrading your membership don't add up to much (see above) apart from narrowing down location and learning all about the member's penis. At the time of this review the 'help' tab didn't work, but you get the basic email support if you have any problems or queries.

Despite being a fairly small site and a little rough around the edges, if you're in Canada and up for gay dating then GayCanada.com is worth a look, even if it's just for the fact that you get to communicate with other members for free. Take advantage of the other features too, but if you're serious about dating and thinking of spending money on a subscription then you're advised to look at some of the other sites on offer in this category.
