Editor's Verdict:

Gaydar.co.uk claims to have the largest range of gay personals on the web. This is quite a boast given some of its competitors. However, it's not just about quantity but quality too (no matter what you might think) and Gaydar.co.uk doesn't disappoint. It's a great looking site and upon arrival you're welcomed by pictures of fit guys in white briefs frolicking in the surf somewhere exotic.....hmmmm......anyway, where was I? Oh yes, the site has a very professional, slick and well designed look to it, which in itself feels reassuring. It's nice to see that for the most part this impression is well-founded.

Joining Gaydar.co.uk is very quick and easy. Plus, it's free. All you need to sign up is a valid email address. Just pick a username and enter your email address and a few details about yourself and you're a member. At this point you can choose whether or not you wish to receive the free digital magazine, or special offers from Gaydar.co.uk suppliers and advertisers.

From the neatly set out homepage you can access all of the main features of the site. From here, you can check out who's online in your area, or guys elsewhere. If the site of a naked male torso makes you go a little weak at the knees (in an 'I'm affronted' kind of way) the dots on a member's profile denotes the amount of nudity in his profile. Red indicates adult content, yellow indicates some nudity, whilst blue signals the kind of pictures that you could show to your mother without making her blush and clip you round the ear. The thumbnails are quite large and detailed too. You can also check out a quicklist of guys in your area, although thumbnails aren't displayed. However, you can hover over the icons to learn more about people and access their full profile should you so wish. At the time of the review there were 28428 members online. As long as you take the time to craft your profile and give plenty of detail about yourself, you should be chatting with handsome guys in no time, whether you're looking for love, sex or friendship, or all three.

There are loads of search options to aid you in your quest. You can look for members using the quick search facility or the more advanced search which is fully customisable. Free members will find some of the search options grayed out, which means that they're only available to premium members. It's probably worth thinking about joining if you like the site as you get plenty of extras for your money. You can also search quickly for members by location, search through the new profiles, or conduct a power search in which you specify keywords. If you're a premium member you can also take advantage of the Cupid feature, in which you specify exactly the kind of guy you're looking for and they trawl through all the new profiles each day and deliver the results to your inbox. Whilst there are plenty of search options to choose from, the search tools are still a little more limited (in terms of lacking search criteria) than those on other sites (e.g. OutPersonals.com).

In addition to emailing other members you can also chat live using a pop-out messager. There are usually plenty of chat rooms to join and it's a great way of meeting new people. If you're heading off to sunny climes it's also possible to use the travel feature to arrange to meet other guys whilst you're away. You can also see if any members are heading your way too. If you're a serious user of the site then it's worth considering taking out a premium membership as you won't be limited to the number of profiles you can view or messages you can send. You also get plenty of enhanced and exclusive features for a reasonable monthly fee (see above). If you have any problems or questions then there's an extensive info and support area to consult, which contains a comprehensive FAQs section, email and online support, which is enhanced if you upgrade.

All in all, whilst Gaydar.co.uk might not have the largest membership base, nor features that quite match up to those of the top sites, it's a really well designed and friendly gay dating site with plenty to get you meeting new people as soon as you get set up. With one or two original features if you take out premium membership (such as distance search), Gaydar.co.uk earns a rightful place in the top 10.
