OhMojo may appear to be a very basic gay dating website… and it is. But that’s not necessarily always a bad thing. This site is stripped down and very simple, but it does its job. There are thousands of guys who’ve created profiles and are waiting to hear from you.

Signing up with this site is very simple and requires just a minimal amount of basic information, which you can later update. You’ll need to verify your account using an email address, and it’s a good idea to upload a photo, but otherwise registration should take a matter of minutes. Once you’ve registered you are able to search for other men based on a few key pieces of information, such as your preferred age range, location, sexual role and whether or not they are online. This could be extended further as our search results gave us a lot of possible matches and it’s hard to know which ones to look at and which ones could have been missed out.

Most of the men on this site have added a photo to their profile (some of them are a little more explicit than others), although the photo options are very limited. Initially each photo appears as a thumbnail, which doesn’t allow you to get a very good impression of the person’s looks without accessing their profile and then clicking on the photo to enlarge it. This means that browsing through search results is very slow indeed, and it can become tiresome. Equally, profiles are all rather samey, with a lot of focus on particular details of appearance (height, body hair, eye colour) and so on, which doesn’t really tell you all that much about the actual person. The layout and colour scheme of profiles is always the same and is a fairly drab arrangement which hardly inspires enthusiasm.

In terms of contacting men you’re interested in, there’s only one option: an email-like message. This is fine, but it’s quite a slow way of communicating. The fact that you can share your contact details with another member simply by clicking a button, or by putting them in your profile information (as some men have) is indicative that many of them use the site simply to make first contact and then go elsewhere, be it texting on their cell phone or using an instant messenger or web cam. The site doesn’t cater for other forms of communication, so this abandonment is likely to be quite common.

If you can see beyond the construction of the site itself and you’re simply looking to find and contact local gay men without having to pay for it then OhMojo could well be worth your while.
