GayCupid.com is a gay dating site that's here with its virtual bow and arrow to help you in your quest for a date, friendship or meeting someone to live happily ever after with.  The site is simple to get to grips with because it's fairly well designed and generally not too cluttered. As well as getting the things you'd expect on a dating site, you also get some fairly advanced features such as voice and video messaging and video chat rooms. It's also a much-improved site and it's great to see that some of the glitches that were identified in our previous reviews have been addressed.

It's free to join the site and set up a standard membership and it only takes a few minutes to complete the online application form. In fact the application process is a little too brief in some ways as it doesn’t allow you to give a proper impression of yourself, although you can update your profile later. However it does seem to hang on details such as eye and hair colour, which seemed unnecessary at this stage. You'll also need a valid email address in order to validate your membership. Still, the whole process is not too laborious.

You can also upload a picture when you sign up, but you can do this later if you'd prefer. Photos tend to be of a decent standard, although not everyone has bothered to upload one, which is pretty standard when dating sites offer free profiles but then require you to pay a subscription to contact people, as this one does. Anyway, once you're registered you can get a good idea of what's on offer. As a free member you can create a profile, browse the profiles of other members, flirt with them and receive messages from paying members. As with a lot of other gay dating sites the features are heavily restricted: you can't enter into free communication via email nor can you use the instant messenger feature or access the chat rooms. Therefore, if you find that you like the site and want to contact other members then you'll have to upgrade.

This isn't the cheapest gay dating site around, nor is it the biggest or most impressive. Therefore we recommend you think very carefully before you upgrade and make sure that you try one or two other sites for comparison. It’s often a good idea to perform a search and to find out if there are any men on there who seem to hit your buttons. If there aren’t then simply go elsewhere, if there are then perhaps you may want to pay a membership fee so that you can contact them. Thankfully, you can use the advanced search as a free member and you'd be well advised to search to see if there are members in your area. If not, it's probably time to look elsewhere, unless you're in the market for some online fun. However, the site's chat rooms are fairly quiet compared to those of some leading sites. But, at the end of the day it's your dime.

One positive element to this site is that you can search within nearly all countries rather than being limited to four (USA, UK, Canada, Australia). In addition, the location search now allows you search by region and by proximity from major towns and cities. In short, the search tools are more impressive and detailed than you might find elsewhere, they are more comprehensive and sophisticated.

Another nice addition is the ability to see who is online and to make contact with them. This means that you don’t have to wait around for members to come online, or continually check your inbox to see if someone’s replied. You can simply log on and make an instant connection. If you are waiting for a response then the site also offers a few ways to pass the time including browsing new members’ profiles, new photos and pictures which have been voted the “hottest”. However, more could be done in the way of additional features, such as blogs and forums, or even online games.

Perhaps the most interesting and uncommon of the features on this site are the video and photo galleries (subscription required for full access), which allow you to view a range of media to suss out the hottest men online. You can also send video mail if you have a Platinum membership, which is a good way to get someone’s attention and show them what you’re really like. You'll also be able to do the usual things, such as creating a favorites list and checking who's visited your profile and registered an interest in you, each of which serves a purpose if you’re interested in spotting people who might be keen on meeting you.

Despite such improvements, it's a shame that you'll find relatively few members online when you login (16 at the time of this review). This is particularly unfortunate when you consider that many of those online members are likely to be non-paying members, so you can’t talk with them unless you’ve upgraded your account. Whilst it's fair to say that the site deserves to be better supported, the best advice is that you join as a free member and wait a while before you commit to a subscription-based membership. There's also a decent FAQs section in case you get stuck and email support should you need it.  

In summary, GayCupid.com is a great little gay dating site, but sadly let down by its small active membership base. However, keep an eye on this site as it has the potential to mount a serious challenge to the current top sites if it can just boost its membership base. There's nothing to stop you supporting the site by signing up for free, although you'll be very limited in terms of communicating with other members. Nevertheless, this could be one to watch for the future.
