As such, Gay.com has a broad appeal to those looking for dating, friendship or a more committed romantic relationship rather than simply hooking up for sex, even though this is possible here. If you're after the latter, you might want to join another site such as OutPersonals.com or Manhunt.net, amongst others. There is more of a community feel than on some other dating sites too and it's much more than simply a dating site. As well as finding a date, you can check out articles and video content on movies, TV, news, fashion, music and travel from gay perspectives.

It's easy to register for the free basic membership by choosing a user name and a valid email address. Once you've done so, you'll be able to have a look at many of the features that Gay.com offers, including creating your own profile and getting in touch with other members. It's got to be worth considering taking out a premium membership subscription if you like the site. For a fairly modest monthly fee you get immediate access to enhanced features that can really make a difference in your search for members. For example, as a premium member you get to see full-sized profile pictures in addition to adult and private pictures. There are no limits on the number of emails you can send in a day and you can also see who's been checking you out and thinks you're hot but, because of the limits imposed on free members, this may affect your ability to find other members to date. Although this site used to offer a 7 day trial premium membership this has now been removed, so the minimum period you’ll be able to pay for is a month.

Once you've signed up you can begin building your profile by uploading pictures and filling in your details. In comparison with the gay dating sites higher up the top 10, the layout of Gay.com is perhaps slightly less intuitive and feels a little cluttered. That said, it doesn't take too long to find your bearings and to create a profile and search for others. A lot of the men on here have taken the time to update their profiles and upload pictures, which is good to see, and you should find quite a few men online, who you could chat with using the 1-on-1 private instant messenger or in one of the site’s many chat rooms.

It's possible to search for other members in two main ways. The quick search option is restricted to the criteria of gender, age range and zip code. If you're a little more choosy (and most members will be) you can configure your own customisable advanced search to pinpoint exactly what you're looking for.  It's possible to specify a range of criteria including appearance, location, interests and lifestyle. The site contains some adult content, which you can upload and view as a premium member if you choose. Alternatively, this also gives you the option of avoiding the viewing of adult content if you find that it's not to your taste. This all depends on what you’re looking for and the various search options help you to find men who are looking for something similar. As well as this you can also create blocked lists to stop unwanted attention, or go into an invisible mode to hide from particular members or simply to look around the site without interruption.

The site support for members is pretty good on Gay.com. First off, there's an extensive FAQs section to refer to. If that doesn't resolve the matter you can email the support desk. If you have a premium membership you can contact chat support (10.00AM to 6.00PM EST Monday to Friday). This is another reason for upgrading your membership as you could be waiting a good twenty-four hours or more before somebody gets back to you. To improve we’d like to see more on-site support videos and guides, and perhaps even a live chat option which connects you to admin staff as and when you need it.
